This is a fantastic opportunity for a Band 6 Physiotherapist to step into an MSK role

Perform highly skilled therapy assessment of patients with diverse and complex presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions.
Use highly skilled clinical reasoning, investigative, analytical skills and manual assessment techniques to form an accurate diagnosis and prognoses in a range of highly complex conditions. Recommend the best course of intervention and to develop comprehensive treatment and discharge plans.

To formulate and regularly review, highly skilled and individual patient management plans based on advanced knowledge of evidence based practice, specialist therapy treatment skills and advanced knowledge of patient outcomes.

Manage clinical risk within own patient caseload. Be responsible for organizing and planning caseload to meet service/patient priorities working without direct supervision.

Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences. Access to advice and support from Therapy Team Lead if required is available at all times, clinical work is not routinely evaluated.

Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

Provide assistance to Therapy Team Leader in the day-to-day management of junior staff/ clinical support staff/ students within the Team.

If required, make recommendations to senior therapists/team leaders on service changes. If necessary contribute to implementations of changes to practice or contribute to service protocols.

Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work

Demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory senses for assessment and manual treatment of patients.

Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation/treatment programmes. This includes patients who may have difficulties understanding or communicating due to e.g. dysphasia, depression, deaf/blindness, cognitive problems, language/cultural barriers, difficulties accepting diagnosis.

Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required. Frequently readjust plans as situations change/arise due to unforeseen circumstances.

Work within Trust clinical guidelines and professional guidelines, and have good working knowledge of national/local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

Work as a lone practitioner (with telephone support from senior MDT member) when working in the community/domiciliary settings/GP surgeries/PCT.

Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust and professional standards. Supervise the record keeping of junior staff and student therapists on placement in line with Trust and professional standards.

Represent Therapy service and/or individualized patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of coordinated multidisciplinary service, and integrate therapy treatment into the treatment programme. This will include discussion of patient care, progress/prognosis, and involvement in discharge planning.

Be responsible for safe and competent use of electrotherapy equipment, gym equipment and patient appliances/aids and ensure that junior/assistants attain competency prior to use through teaching, training and supervision of practice.

To provide advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of treatment and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.

To provide highly specialist advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT regarding the management of patients within particular clinical speciality.

To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work in line with Trust procedures with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

To be an active and autonomous member of staff within the provision of an emergency on-call service and in providing a 7 day service where relevant

To participate in a weekend and Bank Holiday service and be available for flexible working arrangements.


Maintain own competency to practice through Continued Professional Development, and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development and the development of specialist knowledge within speciality.

Deliver informal/formal clinical education and training to student therapists on therapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas. To train, supervise and performance manage junior staff and clinical support staff and assess and evaluate their competence.

To participate in the staff appraisal scheme and Personal Development Plan as both appraiser and appraisee.

To participate in working parties to develop clinical and non-clinical Therapy policy changes within clinical speciality. Implement new developments to meet changes in line with Trust and government targets.

Measure and evaluate own work and current practice through evidence-based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with senior members of the Therapy team.

To demonstrate an advanced understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and apply to work situation. Assist the Therapy Team Leader in leading clinical governance initiatives within the team.

Complete and submit on a weekly basis accurate activity levels (statistics) as per Trust and Department policy.


Be responsible for supervision and coordination of junior staff, students, and clinical support staff on a daily basis within clinical area. Deputise for Therapy Team Leader in their absence, taking responsibility for organizational management of the team, with access to senior staff/Team Leader from other teams at all times.

To assist the Therapy Team Leader in the recruitment of junior/support staff

If requested, assist with recommendations to Therapy Managers regarding service/organisational changes. If requested, may contribute to clinical protocols.

Work within Trust clinical guidelines and professional guidelines, and have good working knowledge of national/local standards of therapy practice. Monitor own practice and that of staff under supervision, ensuring it meets professional standards and quality of practice.

Order appropriate patient equipment from the Loan Store and social services as required.

Make appropriate referrals and to other MDT members/other professional organisations.
