I have recently completed my MSc in Regenerative Medicine, I offer a strong match to the qualification you are seeking for as a medical laboratory assistant. I am hoping to gain skills working in a laboratory to further my career in the hopes of one day taking on a Biomedical Scientist position.

Two years ago, I earned my bachelor’s degree in biomedical science (IBMS accredited degree). Where I was taught laboratory skills including:

• Performed histology techniques such as tissue culture, Haematoxylin and Eosin staining (H&E) and immunohistochemistry staining (IHC), microtome
• Performed molecular techniques such as Antibody staining, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, PCR (including other electrophoresis techniques), ELISA, spectrophotometer, DNA/RNA extraction, RT-PCR, by referring to SOPs
• Handling clinical samples such as blood and other bodily fluids by setting up diagnostic tests to interpret results, by referring to SOPs
• Preparing cell cultures, screening for blood abnormalities and detecting cellular abnormalities
• Cleaning of laboratory space using appropriate disinfectant methods and disposal of hazardous materials in their respective bins
• Interpreting Nanodrop spectrophotometer
• Adhering to health and safety by following COSSH and risk assessment forms
• Used RNeasy mini kit from Qiagen
• Knowledge of GLP and ISO standards (ISO15129)
• Relevant quantitative analysis using SPSS and bioinformatics
• Good IT skills, knowing the basic usage of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and SPSS
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills from various group practical sessions

Shortly after my graduation, I was recruited as a laboratory technician at a College. In this role, I managed laboratory operations that include:

• Preparation of equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes
• Maintain and repair equipment and laboratory apparatus
• Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned, and that chemicals, drugs and other materials are appropriately stored
• Accepting delivery of stock and storing them appropriately by referring to COSHH
• Providing administrative support e.g. ordering stock/chemicals, taking phone calls and directing them to the appropriate department etc.
• Laboratory management and individual work without supervision, referring to SOP's when required
• Ran trials of experiments prior to classes and demonstrate techniques for experiments
• Dissection of mouse and drosophila
• Followed health and safety protocol, wear the correct PPE at all times and disposal of hazardous materials in their appropriate bins
• Catalogue chemicals in respect to best before date and make them available when requested
• Completed a CLEAPSS course on ‘health and safety in the laboratory and preparing solutions’

I was selected to working with individual students and support them on research projects and ensuring that students understand all health and safety procedures and how to handle them in the event of an accident.

During my current master’s Degree, I have 3 months of intense laboratory experience and received health and safety briefings for all laboratory sessions and diligently followed the guidelines and procedures and have also honed my laboratory techniques such as:

• Using aseptic techniques in cell/tissue culture including cell trypsinization and lysation
• Microtome to analyse tissue samples
• Performing wound healing assay procedures
• Labelling and characterisation of antibodies
• Western blot
• Tissue Engineering Techniques: Preparing chondrocyte in cell culture, Mechanical testing using MTS machine, Glycosaminoglycan analysis using spectrophotometric techniques Sterilization by autoclaving, Epi-fluorescent Microscopy
• Statistical analysis
• Good understanding of Good Laboratory Practices, Human Tissue Act, and Ethical Regulations
• Supervising and teaching undergraduate students during their experiments
